Adikal

Adikal is a sub-caste of Ambalavasi Nairs in Kodungallur, Kerala. Women in this caste are known as Adisyaar or as Adiyamma. In Travancore they are known as Adishens or Aadichan Nairs.〔Census of Travancore 1901 - Vol 1 - Page 377〕〔Census of Travancore 1901 - Vol 2 (Imperial Tables) - Table XIII〕 Aadichans were counted as Nair until the Travancore Census of 1891. But from the census of 1901 onwards, they were counted as ''Chakkala Nair and Aadichan Nair'', a separate category within the Nair super-group. They numbered 79 people during the 1901 Census.
==Origin==
Since the temple of Kodungallur has often been associated with animal sacrifices and other scandalous activities, the Nambuthiri sect of Malayali Brahmins refused to conduct poojas at this temple. The community that was willing to carry out pooja were relegated to a lower rung of Brahmin hierarchy known as Ambalavasi by the dominant Nambuthiri sect. This sect of Brahmins who carry out priestly duties at Kodungallur are known as Adikal.
