Ajbelj
Ajbelj (; in older sources also ''Ajbel'';〔''Leksikon občin kraljestev in dežel zastopanih v državnem zboru,'' vol. 6: ''Kranjsko''. 1906. Vienna: C. Kr. Dvorna in Državna Tiskarna, p. 34.〕 (ドイツ語:Aibel),〔〔Statistische Zentralkommission. 1919. ''Spezialortsrepertorium von Krain: Bearbeitet auf Grund der Ergebnisse der Volkszählung vom 31. Dezember 1910''. Vienna: Verlag der K. K. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, p. 9.〕 also ''Eibel''〔''Jahrbuch der kaiserlich-königlichen Geologischen Bundesanstalt.'' 1859. Vienna: Braumüller, p. 49.〕 or ''Eibl''〔Deschman, Carl. 1866. "Zusammenstellung der bisher in Krain gemachten Höhenmessungen." ''Mittheilungen des Musealvereins für Krain'' 1: 1–76, p. 53.〕) is a settlement in the Municipality of Kostel in southern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region.〔(Kostel municipal site )〕 It is a linear village standing on a hill above Kaptol. To the southeast is a karst polje with sinkholes where there are tilled fields, hay fields, and wooded land. There are large numbers of wild boar, bears, deer, foxes, and badgers in the area.〔Savnik, Roman, ed. 1971. ''Krajevni leksikon Slovenije'', vol. 2. Ljubljana: Državna založba Slovenije, p. 216.〕 ==Name== The village of Ajbelj is recorded in old records as ''Alble'' and is locally known as ''Vajblen'' (with prothetic ''v-''). The name is believed to derive from the personal name '' *Albelj'', borrowed from German as a hypocorism of the name ''Albrecht''. The change of the name from ''Alb-'' to ''Ajb-'' was a dissimilation process (''l – ľ > j – ľ'') with parallels elsewhere in Slovene.〔Snoj, Marko. 2009. ''Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen''. Ljubljana: Modrijan and Založba ZRC, pp. 43–44.〕 However, Heinz Dieter Pohl derives the identical German oronym ''Aibel, Eibel'' from German ''Alpe'' 'mountain pasture' via the diminutive forms ''Älpl'', ''Alpl'', ''Älpele'' with Middle Bavarian dialect voicing of ''p'' and vocalization of ''l''—that is, ().〔Pohl, Heinz Dieter. 2004.
