Akkanen

Akkanen is a Finnish-language surname. It is based on the noun ''akka'' (meaning "older woman"), to which the typically Finnish surname-forming suffix -nen has been added. The surname Akkanen has originated in Eastern Finland and has been attested in official records since the 16th century, for instance in Muolaa in 1553, in Jääski and in Viipurin maalaiskunta in 1554, in Kivennapa in 1565 and in Uusikirkko in 1566. In 2000, 701 persons in Finland had the surname Akkanen.〔Pirjo Mikkonen and Sirkka Paikkala: Sukunimet, Helsinki 2000〕 29 members of the Finnish Defence Forces with the surname Akkanen were killed in World War II. Of these 10 were born in Kuolemajärvi, 8 in Kirvu, 2 in Pielavesi, 2 in Pyhäjärvi, 2 in Ruokolahti, 1 in Antrea, 1 in Rautjärvi, 1 in Terijoki, 1 in Uusikirkko and 1 in Viipurin maalaiskunta. As of 20 May 2013, 639 persons registered in the Population Information System of Finland had the surname Akkanen. Of these 610 were permanent residents of Finland and 29 were living abroad.
