Alverton
:''Alverton can also be a variant of Alverston or Alton (disambiguation).'' Alverton is a hamlet and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England, part of the Newark and Sherwood district. It is combined with its neighbouring parish of Kilvington, to form an area for a parish meeting. It contains about 20 houses. It is surrounded by farmland.〔Alverton & Kilvington Parish Meeting website. (Retrieved 4 January 2013. )〕 ==Ghosts== The former Staunton Church of England School in the village is now a private house, said to be haunted by a teacher once murdered there. There have been two purported sitings of a ghost at another house, The Chestnuts, each describing the figure of an elderly lady in Victorian garb, thought to be Mary Brown, who had been a sempstress to Queen Victoria, but returned to Alverton to be a housekeeper to her brother and rule his four children "with a rod of iron."〔''The Nottinghamshire Village Book''. Compiled from materials submitted by Women's Institutes in the County (Newbury/Newark: Countryside Books/NFWI), p. 9.〕
