Aniwan

The Aniwan people are an Australian Indigenous tribe that occupied current day Armidale, New South Wales before the British colonised the area. The Aniwan tribe reached Armidale thousands of years ago during the migration from South Asia some 50,000 years ago. The Aniwan tribe spoke the Nganyaywana language.
Clashes with other tribes and settlers
Recent research shows that the Aniwan tribe had conflict with other tribes that also occupied the Armidale area. It is said the Tribes fought for the right to own the land (this debate still stands today). It is also said that in the early 1840s there was small conflict between European settlers and the Aniwan tribe. Not much is known about conflicts in the Armidale area but it could relate to the Australian frontier wars.
Modern Day Aniwan people
The Aniwan tribe is now recognised as the owners of the Armidale area. The tribe is acknowledged greatly in the ''"caring and protection of the land over countless generations"''. They still live in Armidale and play a big role in the Armidale community.
