Arbogast

Arbogast is an early Germanic name which was the name of a clan within the tribe of the Salian Franks.
Supposedly the seat of the Arbogasts was in Burgundy, France, where they had a family crest.
== Origin ==
On the lid of the Schretzheim silver ''bulla'' (i.e. an amulet box), dated c. AD 600, a runic inscription reads as ''Arogisl (d)'', which is the origin of the name. According to archaeologists, "-aro" meant "eagle" and "-gisl(d)" was a male name element. "-gisl" could be gisd or -gast, gastiz, which came to be translated as "companion". The name also appeared on a silver disc brooch found in a grave at Kirchheim-Teck dating to the second half of the sixth century.〔
Contact with the Romans led to Old Frankish words appearing in Latinized forms in written texts. The name Arogast or Arogastes first appears in The Salic Law, written 507–511 AD.〔 The four authors of the Salic law were "Wisogast, Arogast, Sidogast and Widogast". The systematic version of The Salic Law refers to them as "Wisogastes, Arogastes, etc."
