He was a prince of Persian and Greek Macedonian ancestry. Arcathius was among the sons born to King Mithridates VI of Pontus and his sister-wife Laodice.〔Mayor, ''The Poison King: the life and legend of Mithradates, Rome’s deadliest enemy'' p.114〕 He was born and raised in the Kingdom of Pontus.
