Ardehians

Ardehians (Persian: اردهیان) is the name of a tribe of Aryan people who lived in Zagros Mountains before Muslim conquest of Persia in 650 CE. Ardehians in Shahnameh and Iranian mythology are known to be the first people who discovered Zagros mountains and build their forts there, to defend Persian caravans against Arab bandits in South and West. In Persian mythology it has also been believed that Ardehians were well known for their skills in forging steel and building temples and strongholds for Sassanid empire. According to Michael Axworthy's book, ''Iran: Empire of the Mind'', Ardehians were the providers of chain mail (armour) for Sassanid empire, during their wars and conquests.
== History ==
In 220, before the Battle of Hormozdgān, Ardehians became devoted to Sassanid King Ardashir I and provided his army with a unique type of steel, today known as Wootz steel. They used wootz steel in swords and mail armours, making overthrowing Parthian empire easy for Ardashir I. During Sassanid dynasty, Ardehians were one of the strongest asset and arm of Sassanids. The unity between Ardehians and Sassanids was strong until Muslim conquest in 633 and collapse of empire in 651 which made Ardehians of Zagros mountains flee to Alborz.
