Arkoudilas is a village in Lefkimmi, Greece. Most famousmonument of the place is its monastery. ==Τhe Monastery of Arkoudilas == In the southern part of Corfu next to cape Asprokavos -the CAVO BIANCO-a gravel road takes us beyond the Cavos community, through a thick vegetation, we can reach after two kilometres the hill of Panagia (Mother of Jesus) of Arkoudilas. The vegetation becomes thicker and thicker as we approach and instead of olive trees one can see very tall trees and huge bushes. From up the hill one could view the whole area around Cavos and even further up to the beautiful island of Paxos. Gazing towards the northern west up to the vast coast with the golden sandy beach where the locals can enjoy, far from the crowded Cavos. Arkoudilas woods is about 250 acres full of cypresses, strawberry trees and a lot more .Through the woods and on the top of the hill we can see the Panagia of Arkoudilas. The catholic monastery was built in the 1700s according to the carved crest at the bell tower which is actually the entrance. On the right side of the bell tower we can see a wall (fence) whereas on the left side we can see a form of fortress like battlements. As expanding the building we can see a two-store building named DURIS, probably from the English word TOR which means tower. The tower was actually a form of monastery's fortressing against the pirates and other attackers. The upper part of DURI was according to its construction a place of residence for the owners or the monks with a fireplace through an indoor stony stair via a wooden catapult with ropes and reels which was protecting the monks or the owners from attacks, as mentioned above. The lower part was used like a storage for goods such as wine, olive oil and so on. The elderly remember that from the eastern part of the tower next to the fireplace there used to be a tunnel which led to the beach in order to protect themselves from any potential attacks. Today obviously after the building being demolished we can see a two storey building from the northern west part with a both sided stair (Mpotso) which was the main entrance. The building was used to host the people who attended the festivals and the owners during the 15th of August. The honoring of Mother Marys' death. The monastery at its peak used to have the people who attended the festivals on horses with beautiful clothes designed and prepared with pleasure at the ..argalios. 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Arkoudilas」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
