Awgbu is a town in Orumba north Local Government Area of Anambra State, South East Nigeria. The town of Awgbu had an estimated population of 120,000 in 2006.It is bounded to neighbouring communities e.g. Agulu,Mbaukwu,Umu-awuru,Amaetiti,Amaokpala, Oko, Omogho, Ishiagu and Nanka.The indigenes of Awgbu are the descendant of Ezekanunu.Ezekanunu had six Sons Ugwu,Abor,Osikwu,Ohzu/Amugo and Mbulukor.Ohzu/Amugu are the only twins of their father and remain inseparable till Date. The indigenous people of Awgbu are Igbo and speak the Igbo language.All saints Catholic Church is the seat of Roman Catholic Church in Awgbu, Archdioceses of Awka.The Anglican church also has their parishes in the Town.The two are the leading Christian family in Awgbu. Awgbu is a well Cultured Town,they respect their Tradition and Culture.The Awgbu indigenes are popularly known as NDI-EBENESE. H.R.H Igwe Mich Okechukwu,Eze di Ora Mma 2nd is the Ruling King of Awgbu after so many years of searching.He succeeded late H.R.H Igwe Micheal Ezeayom,Eze di Ora Mma 1st who joined his ancestors in the year 1989. Odo bridge was recorded the longest bridge constructed by Anambra State in 2010 under the Government of Mr Peter Obi,the Governor of Anambra State.The bridge is located between Awgbu,Oko and Amaokpala. Another major road is under construction starting from Eke-Awgbu Market and traverses the various communities of Ama-Etiti, Okpeze and Ndi-Ukwuenu. This road when completed shall be the shortest possible link to Enugu for Imo State Indigenes and greater part of Anambra Town and Villages. Awgbu has one main market that trades on specific day of the Igbo calendar (Eke-Awgbu which trades on the Eke market day).The Market is currently in a very poor and shabby state due to land disputes challenges, as alleged land owners has refused to release their land for construction of shopping malls. Awgbu Natives also found it difficult to dispose off their land for development, this have also hampered development. Awgbu is popularly known to produce good and quality palm wines. It is the best palm wine producer in South East Nigeria. ==Economy== Awgbu economy is largely dependent on Farming and Palm wine selling as major source of income, however the indigenes have prominent businessmen spread across major cities in Nigeria including Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Ibadan and some Northern cities.The people are also predominantly traders and have done very well especially in Clearing and Forwarding, Import/export, Spare Parts, Buying and selling, etc.In recent times there have also been an explosion in the number of graduates and post-Graduates students emerging from the state. Also some natives are currently employed in some Oil & Gas Companies( Shell, Agip, Total, Chevron, NNPC, etc.) across different states in Nigeria.
