BIOFIN
The Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) is a global partnership that helps government’s cost, plan and pay for action on biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use. Launched in 2012, the BIOFIN methodology is being used by 19 countries to analyze, calculate and develop strategies to generate the funds they need to meet national biodiversity targets. The 15 million US Dollar initiative is run by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from the Governments of Germany, Switzerland and the European Union.

== Background ==
Global Biodiversity is being lost at unprecedented levels, causing irreversible damage. The majority of global ecosystems have been altered significantly by human activity.〔Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005. Ecosystems and Human Well-being: Biodiversity Synthesis. World Resources Institute, Washington, DC. http://www.maweb.org/documents/document.354.aspx.pdf〕 With the Convention on Biological Diversity coming into force in 1993, a new global partnership was established to halt biodiversity loss. At the 10th Conference of the Parties of the convention, Parties concluded that while progress had been made, efforts had been insufficient. Countries had developed national biodiversity strategies, but these often lacked detailed budgets and options to finance them. This resulted in a considerable finance gap for biodiversity conservation, which has been estimated to be at a magnitude of around 130-440 billion US$ per year.〔CBD, 2011.
