Bandе́rivtsi ((ウクライナ語:Бандерівці)) or bandе́rovtsy ((ロシア語:Бандеровцы)) is a multiple meaning term derived from the name of the person Stepan Bandera. Initially this term meant members of the Revolutionary Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUNR), led by Stepan Bandera. Nowadays, it usually means those Ukrainian nationalists〔ОУН-УПА, (Хто такі бандерівці і за що вони борються ) 〕 who consider themselves followers of OUNR.〔Сурма, (Чи має Провідник ОУН послідовників у сучасній українській політиці? ) 〕 After the 1940s, term "banderivtsi" was used by Soviet and Russian propaganda to describe the entire Ukrainian nationalism idea. The same way as similar terms like "mazepintsi" (from Ivan Mazepa), "vyhovtsi" (from Ivan Vyhovsky), "petliurivtsi" (from Symon Petliura), "makhnovtsi" (from Nestor Makhno) etc., according to the names of historical figures of Ukrainian history. Most often, this term was used by Soviet propaganda in negative meaning, as a synonym for banditry and threat to Soviet administration. Generally, term meant all Ukrainian nationalists underground movement (despite the movement’s broader division into fractions, term served as a primitive unification tool during the World War II and after it). Another part of meaning was about Ukrainian nationalists living abroad and in Ukraine, who were in opposition to the Soviet national policy. During the national liberation struggle of 1940s-1950s, most of its members (followers of OUNR traditions) called themselves "banderivtsi". In the same meaning, term was used in rebel songs of folk and literary origins, for example: "We are banderitsi with arms in our hands, defending our homeland, living in the woods..."
