Bestha Bestha (also spelled Besta) is a community in Telangana, India. The main occupation within the community is fishing. Its residents are populated within all districts of the pre-Hyderabad State. Bestha community are also named as gangaputra. Bestha in Kannada means 'the one who catches fish' or 'fisherman.' Each village of Karnataka, modern-day Telangana's neighboring state, used to have groups of people assigned to the job of catching fish. These people were called as Bestharu. They were especially populous in costal Karnataka, as well as by the rivers. Recently, however, the people within this community have chosen many other varied professions. Great strides have also been made in education in the community.
