Emperor Bharata, one of the greatest kings of ancient India, and founder of the eponymous dynasty, had nine sons from three wives. No son was worthy to become the next Emperor, Bhúmanyu was born out of a great sacrifice that Bharata performed for the sage Bharadwaja. Bhúmanyu was adopted by Bharata as his son. The Mahabaratha, in the Adi Parvan, tells two different stories about Bhúmanyu's birth.
