BlephEx
BlephEx is a medical device used in the field of ophthalmology to treat blepharitis and dry eye disease. Dry eye disease has a huge impact on the quality of life and vision for patients all around the world. The handheld device is used by a doctor to gently exfoliate the eyelid at the lash line and remove the inflammatory biofilm that leads to chronic lid disease and discomfort. == History ==
BlephEx was created in 2013 by James Rynerson, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist, as the first patented, in-office procedure that allows eye care professionals to take an active role in treating blepharitis by removing biofilm, scurf and debris from the eyelids.〔 Since the lid margin is the only place on the body that never gets washed, the bacterial formed biofilm tends to accumulate over the years, getting worse as we age. Contact lens wearers are also prone to developing biofilms of the llid margin at a much earlier age due to the foreign body nature of the contact lens. Historically, doctors simply instructed patients to do home lid scrubs with diluted shampoo or other commercial preparation, or use artificial tears, or both. Contact lens wearers were told to stop wearing contact lenses. These home remedies were very ineffective at addressing the underlying issue, or reducing the constant itching, rubbing and irritation associated with blepharitis and dry eye disease. Now doctors can treat this disease in their office with a quick, eight-minute, painless procedure. The biofilm is totally removed, eliminating the source of inflammation which leads to healthier, more comfortable eyelids and an increase in natural tear production. Many patients are able to stop using artificial tears altogether.
