Bought
''Bought'' is a 1931 American Pre-Code drama film produced and released by Warner Bros. and directed by Archie Mayo. The movie stars Constance Bennett, Ben Lyon, Richard Bennett and Dorothy Peterson. The film is based on a novel, entitled ''Jackdaw's Strut'', by Harriet Henry.
==Synopsis==
Stephanie Dale grows up as a poor girl and resents her mother's working class sensibilities. Bennett's mother, was never married and she raised her daughter as a single parent. Stephanie dreams of living a rich lifestyle and gets a job modelling at a modiste shop. David Meyer, an executive, notices her and immediately is attracted to Bennett. One day, Stephanie returns home to find her mother has died. She moves out and finds an apartment in a location where she hopes she will be able to meet socialites. Meyer develops a relationship with Stephanie, which allows her to begin indulging in luxuries as Meyer is wealthy. They share an interest in books. Stephanie is put off, however, by Meyer's age, clothes and manners.
Nick Amory, who is young and handsome, is also interested in Stephanie, who prefers Meyer's company for his wealth and interests. One day, Meyer notices a photograph of Stephanie's mother and realizes that he is her father, but keeps this information secret. Meyer now helps his daughter meet wealthy socialites. At one of the numerous parties she attends she meets Charles Carter Jr., with whom Stephanie immediately falls in love. She tells Richard that she plans to marry Carter. Amory, who finally gets a raise, proposes to Stephanie, but is rejected. Carter and Stephanie plan their wedding. All is going well until Carter discovers that Stephanie's were never married and thus immediately calls off the wedding.
It takes this to make Stephanie realize how shallow society people truly are. One day, she receives a book from Meyer. Regretting her past behaviour, she visits him to apologize. While she is browsing Richard's library, she discovers that Amory has been waiting there to see her. They reconcile and Stephanie finally learns that Meyer is her father.
