Branka (Cyrillic script: Бранка) is Serbian and Croatian adaptation of the Portuguese name Branca (the name is common in Brazil). In Portuguese branca means white, like blanka in Spanish and bianca in Italian. Branca (spelled with C) is a common last name in Italy. The original name of the famous Moroccan city Casablanca, was Casabranca. The name Branka has become popular in the territory of former Yugoslavia some hundred years ago. The Slavic names with the same root 'Bran': Branislava, Branimir have a different meaning - defender, protector.
