Bushong

Bushong is a surname found mostly in the United States, derived from the surname Boschung found mainly in Switzerland, but also in the Palatinate and other regions in Western Europe.
==The origin and meaning of the Bushong surname==

The Boschung name is first noted in the 1520s in Jaun, Fribourg, Switzerland and in the 1530s a few miles away in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. They would have been speakers of a Swiss German dialect, more specifically a predecessor of the western High Alemannic dialect (Bernese German).
The Bushong family's German language influence is also illustrated in documents and on tombstones.〔Photograph on FindaGrave.com of (Anna Eva Bushong's tombstone )〕
When Fribourg joined the Old Swiss Confederacy in the 15th century, some of its leading families translated their names into German, while others just adapted the spelling to the German orthography of the time. Thus, the French surname ''Bosson'' became ''Boschung''.〔Ernst Eichler, ''Namenforschung / Name Studies / Les noms propres.'', Handbooks of Linguistics and Communication Science (HSK), Walter de Gruyter, 1996, ( 1240 ).〕
The American surnames ''Bushong'' and ''Bushon'' are anglicized variants of ''Boschung''. The spelling was changed after immigration to Colonial America.
The immigrants, Hans and Johann Nicholas both arrived as Boschung, Hans in 1731 and Johann Nicholas in 1732. The original ships manifests and transcriptions list them as Boschung, but the spelling was changed in their American lives.〔(A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and Other Immigrants in Pennsylvania ) page 67〕〔(A Collection of Upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and Other Immigrants in Pennsylvania ) page 84〕
Hans and Johann Nicholas through his son, Andreas and their descendants show civic records as well as tombstones with their name spelled Bushong.〔Bushongs in the (Salem Hellers Reformed Church Cemetery ) listed on FindaGrave.com〕
