Bustees
In India, the term bustee is often used interchangeably with slum. Bandyopadhyay (1990: 86) points out that there are legal differences between the terms. A slum is an area with "conditions injurious to public health or safety ...";〔http://astro.temple.edu/~sanjoy/calpap.html〕 a bustee, on the other hand is defined by the physical nature and dimensions of contiguous dwelling structures.
Generally, a bustee is an inferior slum. There are at least 2,000 bustees in Kolkata city, and in the metropolitan area the total bustee population was estimated to be 3 million.
