Bürgerbräukeller

The Bürgerbräukeller was a large beer hall located in Munich, Germany. Opened in 1885, it was one of the largest beer halls of the Bürgerliches Brauhaus company, a 19th-century brewery. After Bürgerliches merged with Löwenbräu in 1921, the hall was transferred to that company.〔Wolfgang Behringer: Löwenbräu. Von den Anfängen des Münchner Brauwesens bis zur Gegenwart. Süddeutscher Verlag, München 1991, ISBN 3-7991-6471-5〕
The Bürgerbräukeller gained a strong Nazi connection when on 8 November 1923 Adolf Hitler launched the Beer Hall Putsch there; sixteen years later, in 1939, the building was the location of the attempted assassination of Hitler and other Nazi leaders by Georg Elser. It survived aerial bombing in WWII.
After the war it had diverse uses, such as a recording studio. Carlos Kleiber's famous ''La traviata'' was made in the hall in 1976. Bürgerbräukeller was finally demolished in 1979,〔After the Battle: It Happened Here: http://www.mythoselser.de/texts/afterthebattle.pdf〕 making way for another arts endeavor, the Gasteig complex, and the music-rights entity GEMA.
==Location==

The Bürgerbräukeller was located in the Haidhausen district of Munich on the east side of the Isar River. The entrance was from Rosenheimer Street, with rear access from Keller Street. Since 1980, the site has been redeveloped with the construction of the Gasteig Culture Centre, the Hilton Munich City Hotel and the headquarters of GEMA.
