Eagle's minimal essential medium Eagle's minimal essential medium (EMEM) is a cell culture medium developed by Harry Eagle that can be used to maintain cells in tissue culture. It contains: * amino acids * salts (calcium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, and monosodium phosphate) * glucose * vitamins (folic acid, nicotinamide, riboflavin, B12) A variation of this medium, called Dulbecco’s modified Eagle's medium (DMEM), (Dulbecco/Vogt modified Eagle's minimal essential medium), contains approximately four times as much of the vitamins and amino acids present in the original formula and two to four times as much glucose. Additionally, it contains iron and phenol red. DMEM is suitable for most types of cells, including human, monkey, hamster, rat, mouse, chicken and fish cells. == See also ==
