Dansaekhwa

Dansaekhwa ((朝鮮語:단색화)) is a movement that emerged in Korean painting starting in the mid-1970s,〔Morley, Simon. "Dansaekhwa: Korean Monochrome Painting." ''Third Text'' 27.2 (2013): 189-207.〕 when a group of artists began to push paint, soak canvas, drag pencils, rip paper, and other wise manipulate the materials of painting.
Figures associated with the movement include: Chung Chang-Sup, Chung Sang-Hwa (Chung Sanghwa), Ha Chonghyun, Heu Hwang, Kim Guiline, Kwon Young-woo, Lee
Dong Youb, Lee Ufan, Park Seobo, Suh Seung-Wong, and Yun Hyong-keun.The word translates literally as “monochrome painting” or “single-color painting.” The word can also be romanized as “Tansaekhwa.”
Dansaekhwa means ‘monochrome painting’ in Korean. The monochrome painting emerged in South Korea during 1970s.
The time, Dansaekhwa emerged is when South Korea needed strong social and political control. They wanted to promise the safety after Korean War (1950-1953). The dominant ambition for cheering rapid economic development made them uncomfortable after the Korean War. Dansaekhwa represent their cultural past, which might be rupture, and the new trend style in 1970s. Korean artists combated the liberating example from Western modernism. And they tried to breakdown their own style and follow Western style. Dansaekhwa is not only an increasing consciousness among Korean artists but also the creativeness of philosophical traditions that advanced themselves to the monochromatic style, and of a cultural perspective that lead them to freedom of expression.〔Morley, Simon. "Dansaekhwa: Korean Monochrome Painting." ''Third Text'' 27.2 (2013): 189-207.〕
==Introduction to Japan==
Lee Ufan had moved to Japan in 1956, where he established himself with the Mono-ha movement in the late 1960s. In the mid-1970s he introduced his Korean peers to the Tokyo art scene. “Five Korean Artists, Five Kinds of White,” a group show held at Tokyo Gallery in May 1975, is often credited as the first major presentation of the movement. The five featured artists were Kwon Young-woo, Lee Dong Youb, Heu Hwang, Suh Seung-won and Park Seobo.
