Doulophone

The doulophone (or cuprophone) is a lip reed or brass musical instrument.
The name ''doulophone'' derives from the classical Greek word ''δουλος'' meaning slave, for the reason that the instrument is—for the most part—unable to maintain a melody of its own, so it plays a subservient role to other instruments that define the melody. The alternative name, ''cuprophone'', derives from the classical Greek ''κυπρος'', meaning ''copper'', because the instrument usually made from that metal.
The doulophone is invariably pitched in C. It is distinct in tone from the rest of the brass family, and is characterized by its cylindrical, wide-bore resonator (typically constructed from drainpipe). Such a resonator provides the doulophone with a rich, sonorous tone suited to its role as provider of background texture in ensemble playing. The majority of the bore is conical and ''natural'' (without valves or slides). These properties make it cheap to produce, but limit its melodic versatility. To bring useful notes from the doulophone's harmonic series into a comfortable playing range, the actual length of the instrument must be excessively long. This typically produces a low pitched pedal-note detached from any melody.
Thomas Wood developed the doulophone in 2005. So far—only three have been made: the Contrabass (with a fundamental pitch of 65 Hz C), the Octocontrabass (with a fundamental pitch of 32.5 Hz C, depicted above) and the Dioctocontrabass (with a fundamental pitch of 16.25 Hz C). He plans to make further instruments to complete the family, from piccolo to hyperbass.
