In Greek mythology, the name Echion ( (''gen''.: Ἐχίονος), derivative of ἔχις ''echis'' "viper") referred to five different beings. *One of the Gigantes.〔Claudian, ''Gigantomachy'' 104.〕 *One of the surviving ''Spartoi'', the "sown men" that sprang up from the dragon's teeth sown by Cadmus;〔Pseudo-Apollodorus, ''Bibliotheke'' iii. 4.1; Hyginus ''Fabula'' 178; Ovid, ''Metamorphoses'' iii.126.〕 "it was Echion who, for his great valor, was preferred by Cadmus to be his son-in-law:"〔Pausanias, ix.5.2.〕 Echion was father of Pentheus and Epirus (mythology). *One of the Argonauts, son of Hermes and Antianeira (daughter of Menoetius), brother of Erytus;〔Apollonius Rhodius, ''Argonautica'', 1. 52–56〕 participated in the Calydonian Boar Hunt, according to Hyginus〔Hyginus, ''Fabulae'', 173〕 and Ovid. *One of the suitors of Penelope.〔Pseudo-Apollodorus, ''Epitome'' vii.26ff.〕 *One of the Greeks who fought at the Trojan War.
