It was one of the first games developed for the Atari Lynx, and was released with the platform's launch. From the game's opening: "The Criminal Brain has kidnapped the President's daughter and you have to go save her. You, Electrocop, have to enter a fortress to save her with loads of robots to attack, doors to hack open and a few bonus games within the terminals to play while you wait." A long-running rumor was that Electrocop was initially developed as a 3D sequel to ''Impossible Mission''. However, when asked about this rumor, ''Electrocop'' developer Greg Omi said, "It's funny, but I can't remember if it was supposed to be a sequel to ''Impossible Mission'' or not.
