The practice of sending forth righteous thoughts evolved in response to the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese authorities. The technique is performed in addition to five other meditative qigong forms that comprise the exercise system of Falun Gong.〔 ==Overview== The practice of sending forth righteous thoughts was initiated by Falun Gong’s teacher, Master Li Hongzhi, in May 2001. Instructions on how to perform the exercise was published on Falun Gong websites the following month. The purpose of sending forth righteous thoughts is to eliminate evil on a spiritual plane; one Falun Gong practitioner described it as playing a similar role to prayer in Christian tradition.〔 The ritual is performed by sitting in the full lotus (cross-legged) position. Two mudras (hand gestures) are employed: the first hand gesture involves holding the right palm erect in front of the chest (单手立掌), while the second consists of holding the hands in the “lotus palm” position (莲花手印).〔Minghui.org.
