Garg is one of the 18 gotras of the Agarwal Vaishya community. Garg is also used as a surname by those from this gotra. The Agarwal community, mentioned during the Mahabharata epic era in ancient India, is found mostly in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Mumbai. The Garg gotra originated from Gargi who was a celebrated female sage Vachankavi, born in the family of Garga.
