It plays a key role in modulating amino acid metabolism as a response to nutrient deprivation. == Introduction == GCN2 is the only known eukaryotic initiation factor 2α kinase (eIF2α) in ''Saccharomyces cerevisiae''.〔 It inactivates eIF2α by phosphorylation at Serine 51 under conditions of amino acid deprivation, resulting in repression of general protein synthesis whilst allowing selected mRNA such as GCN4 to be translated due to regions upstream of the coding sequence.
