Gieten

Gieten is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 13 km east of Assen.
Gieten was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became a part of Aa en Hunze.〔Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. ()〕
In 2001, the town of Gieten had 4175 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 2.1 km², and contained 1778 residences.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), (''Bevolkingskernen in Nederland 2001'' ). (Statistics are for the continuous built-up area).〕
The statistical area "Gieten", which can also include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 5360.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), (''Statline: Kerncijfers wijken en buurten 2003-2005'' ). As of 1 January 2005.〕
