Gieten is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 13 km east of Assen. Gieten was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became a part of Aa en Hunze.〔Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. ()〕 In 2001, the town of Gieten had 4175 inhabitants.
