Gilchrist is an old Irish Gaelic given name and a surname of Scottish Gaelic origin, having originated in Islay. It is an Anglicisation of the Medieval Gaelic ''Gille Chriosd'', meaning "servant of Christ." Some variations known to exist are ''Gillecrist'', ''Gilcreest'', ''Gilcrest'', ''Gilchrest'' and ''Gilcress''.
