The troupe were formed by Jo Cook, who had been a member of the ‘Beat Girls’, who appeared in a weekly pop show on BBC 2 called ''The Beat Room''. Initially, when artists were not available to perform their number one hits on ''Top of the Pops'', the camera panned to audience members dancing, but the producer then decided it was necessary to feature professional dancers and recruited the Go-Jos. Initially, Linda Hotchkin and Jane Bartlett were the two other members of the three girl troupe. They were named 'Jos' after Jo Cook' but she left to concentrate on choreography, and the troupe expanded to six with the addition of Lesley Larbey, Wendy Hilhouse, Barbara von der Heyde and Thelma Bignell.
