Gyrwe
Gyrwe was an Anglo-Saxon name for Jarrow, in North East England. The word ''Gyruum'' represents the Old English ''() Gyrwum'' = "() the marsh dwellers", from Old English ''gyr'' = "mud", "marsh".〔See e.g. Ekwall, E., ''The Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names'' (4th edition), OUP, 1960, p. 268 (Jarrow), where Ekwall links these "marsh dwellers" with the Gyrwas, who inhabited the area around Ely and Peterborough (earlier "Medeshamstede").〕 The Gyrwe is a reconstructed Saxon farm at Bede's World at Jarrow. ==Notes==
