Hanabusaya

''Hanabusaya'' is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the Campanulaceae, the bellflowers, containing the single species ''Hanabusaya asiatica''. It is endemic to Korea. It is known in English as diamond bluebell and in Korean as ''Geumgang Chorong'', having been named for the site at which it was first discovered, Geumgangsan Mountain.〔(Chiaksan: Flagship Species. ) Korea National Park Service. 2009.〕
This species is a perennial herb bearing pendulous, bell-shaped flowers with five-lobed violet corollas.〔 The flowers are pollinated by bees.〔Chung, M. G., et al. (2001). (Conservation genetics of an endangered herb, ''Hanabusaya asiatica'' (Campanulaceae). ) ''Plant Biology'' 3(1), 42-49.〕 The plant lacks basal leaves, a characteristic that distinguishes it from its close relatives.〔Kim, Y. D., et al. (1999). (Molecular evidence for the phylogenetic position of ''Hanabusaya asiatica'' Nakai (Campanulaceae), an endemic species in Korea. ) ''Journal of Plant Biology'' 42(2), 168-73.〕
The plant is limited to the mountains of the east-central Korean Peninsula.〔 It is known from Mount Bokgyesan, for example.〔SangSu, K., et al. (2006). (Flora and vegetation of Mt. Bokgyesan. ) ''Korean Journal of Environment and Ecology'' 20(2), 208-26.〕 It is often found on north-facing mountain slopes, mainly between 580 and 1,396 meters in altitude, according to sampling studies. It is associated with the plant species ''Carex siderosticta'', ''Ainsliaea acerifolia'', ''Calamagrostis arundinacea'', ''Athyrium yokoscense'', and ''Astilbe rubra''. The slopes are dominated by ''Quercus mongolica'', the Mongolian oak, and ''Acer pseudosieboldianum'', the Korean maple. The substrates are loam and sand.〔SuKil, J., et al. (2010). (Environmental characteristics and vegetation of ''Hanabusaya asiatica'' habitats. ) ''Korean Journal of Horticultural Science & Technology'' 28(3) 497-506.〕
Genus ''Hanabusaya'' had a second species, ''H. latisepala'', but it is now considered to be a variety of ''H. asiatica''.〔
