Harmons

Harmons is a supermarket chain located within the state of Utah in the United States. Harmons operates 16 stores - 1 each in Ogden, Roy, Farmington, Orem, and St. George, with the other 11 located in Salt Lake County. The newest Harmons is located in Downtown Salt Lake City and opened in February 2012. Harmons stores are large and, in addition to groceries, have pharmacies, clothing and various non-food items for sale. Harmons has also opened its first "small" market in the Harvard/Yale neighborhood of Salt Lake City.
==History==
In 1932, George Reese (Jake) Harmon and his wife Irene started a small grocery store called "The Market Spot" which initially sold fruit and vegetables. The couple lived in a small living quarters behind the store which was located at 33rd South and Main Street in Salt Lake County. Soon, the store was selling many other grocery items. In 1942, after a vehicle collided with the store and caused serious structural damage, the Harmons went on to open a cafe. By 1945, the cafe was sold and a new grocery store, initially called "The Green Store", was opened at 4000 West and 3500 South. This site became the location of the first "Harmons" and is still a Harmons site today, although with a new structure (original Harmons Market burned in 1971 ). A new replacement store became the first "Harmons Supermarket". By 1976, there were two Harmons, and by 1998, there were eight. A 50,000 sq. ft. Harmons opened in February 2012 on the eastern side of the large multi billion dollar City Creek Center development project in downtown Salt Lake City.〔(Church: City Creek project on target for 2012 completion )〕 Harmons is still owned by the members of the Harmon family.
