JavaZone is a software development conference, organized in Oslo, Norway. JavaZone is an independent conference and a forum for knowledge exchange, recruitment and branding. Some 40 large and mid-sized businesses exhibit their products and services in a separate exhibition space, while more than 100 presentations are given in the conference facilities. JavaZone is run and organized mainly with volunteer work. This has been one of the key factors in the success of JavaZone through the years. Each year, thousands of hours are put into making the conference as successful as possible. The technical programme is structured and planned by a programme committee, which puts together the programme by inviting both domestic speakers and speakers from all around the world. Professionals know what professionals want, so the speakers are hand-picked, and the presentations are relevant. In the tradition of the conference, speakers are not paid an appearance fee for their contributions. Around half of the presentations are given in English and the other half in one of the Scandinavian languages. The conference's unconventional and non-commercial approach has also boosted its popularity. == History == The first event in the JavaZone series started out as a Sun Microsystems event in 2002, with 350 participants in the basement of Chateau Neuf, one of the main hang-outs for Oslo University students. The Norwegian Java User Group, javaBin, was given the responsibility for ensuring the technical quality of the event. In 2004, javaBin took over the entire event, with Sun Microsystems contributing as a partner, on a par with the other partners. javaBin moved the conference to the SAS Hotel on Holbergs plass in Oslo. By then, it had grown to 800 participants and 23 partners. Over the next three years, interest in JavaZone increased steadily, with 800, 1,000 and then 1,400 participants, and it reached an all-time high in 2008, with 2,300 participants and 47 partners.
