KAPP

KAPP is the ABC affiliate for Yakima, Washington, serving the Central Washington area with a mix of news, sports, syndicated fare, and local programming since it first signed on the air on September 21, 1970. It is a sister station to KVEW in Kennewick; the latter is reckoned as a semi-satellite to KVEW though it identifies as a station in its own right. The station is owned by Morgan Murphy Media.
On satellite, KAPP is only available on DirecTV, while Dish Network carries KVEW instead. Both do not carry either stations' Me-TV subchannel.
==History==
Before KAPP signed on, KIMA-TV had carried ABC as a secondary affiliation until KNDO signed on in 1959 and became the area's primary ABC affiliate until 1965, when it switched its primary affiliation to NBC. Both KNDO and KIMA-TV shared ABC's programming from that point until KAPP signed on in 1970 and all ABC programming moved to KAPP. The most notable ABC program shown on the station's first day was the first-ever Monday Night Football game.
It began airing Spokane's Me-TV affiliate KXMN-LD on a digital subchannel in September 2006.〔http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6335167.html?display=Breaking+News〕 KAPP did sign off at night, but this practice ended in 2012 with the addition of World News Now.
On December 22, 2008, KAPP discontinued its 6 pm and weekend newscasts. The 11pm newscast is 5 minutes long and all weather reports come from Spokane as well. In addition to this move, 17 employees from KVEW and KAPP were laid off〔(KAPP-TV to cut 6 p.m. broadcast - 17 jobs, Mai Hoang, Yakima Herald-Republic, November 7, 2008 )〕 and the building listed for sale.〔(KAPP Television building for sale as station cuts back, Mai Hoang, Yakima Herald-Republic, December 31, 2008 )〕
KAPP has been digital-only since February 17, 2009.〔(FCC list of full-service US TV stations ), February 16, 2009〕
