KGNS-DT2 is the ABC-affiliated television station for Laredo, Texas, and the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Owned by Gray Television, it operates as a second digital subchannel of NBC affiliate KGNS-TV. Over the air, it broadcasts in high definition on VHF channel 8.2 from a transmitter located near the Pinto Valle Industrial Park (to the immediate north of the United States-Mexico border), northwest of Laredo. KGNS-DT2 is carried on channel 9 on Time Warner Cable and channel 12 on DirecTV and Dish Network; the subchannel's on-air branding of ''NGNS 12'' references the latter. It operates out of studios located on West Del Mar Boulevard and Springfield Avenue (near I-35) in northern Laredo. ==History== The subchannel's history traces back to the September 1998 launch of a cable-only affiliate of The WB Television Network that was part of The WB 100+ Station Group, a similar service to The CW Plus that was created to expand national coverage of The WB via primarily local origination outlets managed by cable providers in markets ranked above #100 by Nielsen Media Research. From its inception until July 2014, it was seen on cable channel 19. Since it was cable-exclusive, the channel used the "KTXW" callsign in a fictional manner. Prior to the sign-on of KTXW, Laredo viewers received their WB programs via Superstation WGN, and in early 1998, KRRT when that station dropped UPN in exchange for The WB. On January 24, 2006, The WB and CBS Corporation-owned UPN announced that the two networks would cease broadcasting and merge into a new broadcast network called The CW. On September 18, 2006, KGNS-TV launched a second digital subchannel affiliated with The CW through The CW Plus (a similar operation to The WB 100+ Station Group). With the subsequent sign-on of digital subchannel 8.2, the subchannel assumed control of "KTXW" bringing the channel over-the-air coverage throughout the market. In May 2013, SagamoreHill Broadcasting reached a deal to sell KGNS, along with KGWN-TV in Cheyenne, Wyoming and KSTF in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Yellowstone Holdings, a subsidiary of Frontier Radio Management. On November 4, 2013, Gray Television announced a deal to acquire Yellowstone Holdings for $23 million. In the two decades since, cable systems in Laredo piped in KSAT-TV in San Antonio or KIII in Corpus Christi. Following the affiliation's launch in July 2014, CW programming was dropped.
