KXXM San Antonio, "Mix 96.1" is a Top 40 (CHR) station owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. (formerly Clear Channel Communications until September 2014). Its studios are located on Interstate 10 in Northwest San Antonio near Wonderland of the Americas Mall, and the transmitter site is in Frederich Wilderness Park on the city's northwest side. ==History of 96.1== KRHH signed on in 1994 as Satellite Music Networks Real Country. September 3, 1998 at 5:00 pm Urban Adult Contemporary 96.1 KSJL becomes the all new Mix 96.1 KSJL FM as a rock-based CHR a couple of weeks later the call letter would change to KXXM. The first song aired was "The Way" by Fastball. Mix would play artists like Will Smith, Jewel, Nysnc, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and other Adult Top 40 artists. The change of format was a result of a sale back in June 1998 of 96.1 from Inner City Broadcasting to Clear Channel Communications for the amount of $10 million. Clear Channel has bought the last piece of radio real estate from Inner City Broadcasting. Back in March 1993 Clear Channel acquired Inner City's 760 KSJL AM, to make way for "WOAI-760" which would air Larry King. July 4, 1998-September 4, 1998 KSJL drops the Mix show, and reverts to a more Adult based Urban Contemporary format which would simulcast on AM 810 KCHG via Local Marketing Agreement. KCHG calls would change in October 1998 to KSJL AM, and KTXX-FM 92.5 would increase in power to reach San Antonio proper and change calls to KSJL. March 27, 1993-July 4, 1998 KSAQ-FM becomes KSJL-FM Inner City drops SMN-The Touch Urban Adult Contemporary format and replaces it with a Urban Adult Contemporary based format but adds some mainstream Urban Contemporary tracks, and adds "The Mix Show" with Ricco and D-Street which would air Monday-Saturdays at 7 pm all the way to 10 pm followed by Slow Jams with Tommy Young. March 17, 1993-March 27, 1993 KSJL 760 AM transitions to KSAQ 96.1 and the station calls itself 76 KSJL-AM and 96.1 KSAQ FM March 17, 1991-March 17, 1993 KSAQ's Hybrid CHR format Q96fm would change formats to Rock as 96rock becoming San Antonio's only FM rock station until 1992 when Oldies 99.5 KISS reverted to its rock format. September 1988-March 17, 1991 KSAQ becomes Q96fm dropping its Super Q moniker, and sister 76AM becomes SMN-Z-Rock Album rock. A long segment of news known as "Cruz News" aired weekday mornings at 7 on Q96. 1986-September 1988 Inner City Broadcasting buys 96.1 from C&W Wireless and Top 40 All Hit 76 KSJL becomes KSAQ Super Q 96/76 during the AM Stereo craze of the late 80s. 1983-1986 KMFM becomes KSLR as a Contemporary Christian format "Son Light Radio FM 96" C&W Wireless acquires station from Classic Media. 12/1977-1983 Classic Media acquires 96.1 from the Penningtons.
