Kaamelott
''Kaamelott'' is a French television series that originally ran from 2005 to 2009. It combines medieval fantasy and comedy〔In a TV interview on Dec. 1, 2008, Astier sums up his vision of ''Kaamelott'' as "Le médieval fantastique en comédie." See (Dailymotion video )〕 to present a new "realistic epic"〔"L'épique réaliste," (Astier, in a BFM TV interview, late November 2008. )〕 version of the Arthurian legend.
While the series takes place in the 5th century,〔See the M6 website for the specification of the 5th century (M6 Season 1 ). This is the traditional period for Arthur's rise to power, though ''Kaamelott'' makes his reign a bit early--in the episode "Le Dernier Empereur" (Livre1) the Roman emperor Romulus Augustulus, who ruled in 476, is mentioned as a contemporary.〕 it uses modern language and situations to create a humorous view of the Arthurian legend, even in the fifth season (or "book") when the mood becomes darker and more dramatic as Arthur's kingdom begins to disintegrate.
The whole series is written, edited and directed by Alexandre Astier, who also stars as King Arthur and composes all the music for the show. His father Lionnel Astier, his mother Joëlle Sevilla and his half-brother Simon Astier also star in the show as Leodegrance, Dame Séli and their son Ywain respectively.
The series was preceded in 2003 by a short movie, ''Dies iræ'', that the show's creator, Alexandre Astier, wrote and directed.'' Dies irae'' featured mostly the same cast as the TV series and followed the same concept. It was used to pitch the idea of the series to the M6 television network, at a time when M6 was looking to replace another successful short TV series, ''Caméra Café''. However, ''Kaamelott'' exceeded ''Caméra Cafés audience only three weeks after broadcasting started.
