Kanakides
Kanakides is an abandoned village on the island of Aegina, Greece. A half of a century ago there were three houses here, though now either empty or mostly ruined. The former inhabitants were good builders, farmers, fishermen and skilled with the olive-press. The families were large and its members long-lived, living a life in nature, and eating their own produce. They had vineyards and kitchen gardens, outdoor ovens, patimata, where they stomped their grapes, animals and threshing-floors worked by mules and donkeys for the wheat and barley they grew. Donkeys brought needed items from Aegina which were not produced in the village. Light was provided during the evenings from both olive and petroleum lamps. The last inhabitants moved out in the 1970s. The village can be reached by either foot or car, and offers spectacular views of the east side of the island.
