Karavaloor is a village situated in Kollam district in the state of Kerala, India. Karavaloor is about 65 km from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram 〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Census of India : Villages with population 5000 & above )〕 Nearest town Punalur is 5 km. ==Etymology== Karavaloor can also be written as ''karavalur''. There is a history or myth behind the name Karavalur, which 'kara' is a word derived from name khara", demon who took his sword at this place to fight against lord Sree Ram. "Val"(Swod) "Uru" (place). The elaborated meaning of the name Karavalur in the language " Malayalam" means, "the place where Demon Khara took his sword". It is believed that here is where Lord Sree Ram killed the demon khara in battle. The Shiva Linga at Peedika Bhagavathy Temple is considered to be installed by lord Ram. Karavalur Panchayathu is about 5 km from Punalur on the Punalur - Anchal i.e. Punalur - Thiruvananthapuram road. The scenic beauty of the area is quite noteworthy. The place is filled with rubber plantation, Banana plantation, jack fruit trees and paddy fields. Karavalur is surrounded by beautiful places like Poikayil, Ayanicodu, Venchempu, and Mathra, where the Panchayath administrative office as well as the village office is located. The post office of Karavalur is located at the heart of Karavalur jn, which is apart from Mathra Post office. The religion consists of the Hindus, Christians and partly Muslims. Karavaloor is knowledge for Goddess Bhadrakali or Peedika Bhagavathy. Karavalur temple festival is a very famous celebration in the area and it has been considered as the biggest event in taluk. It is celebrated in the Malayalam Month of Meenam and is known as Meenathiruvathira Thirunnal. There is also other two temples one on the west known as Padinjattinkara Sree Mahadevar Temple and other on east part known as panayam sree mahadeva temple were the god shiva is worshipped .There the festival in in Malayalam month of Makaram and is called Makarathiruvathira Thirrunal. There are many churches situated here, a few of them are Bethel Marthoma Church containing more than 600 active members, Kereeth Marthoma Church, St Benedict Malankara Syrian Catholic Church( which is now under construction), St George Orthodox Church, Nithyasahaya Matha Church. The Pentecost churches include Assemblies of God church, Church of God and many Independent Pentecostal churches. Karavalur village has two high schools namely, Karavalur ( AMMHS) and Venchempu higher secondary school(NGPMHS), apart from them, there is a government-run lower primary school at Karavalur.
