Karungulam is a village in Tamil Nadu, India. There are several villages in the same name of Karungulam in Tamil Nadu, but the village Karungulam where Vagulagiri Hill exists is a well known and famous one. The unique feature of this temple is that the Navagrahas are with their wives. In Agathiar Naadi Jothidam some of the people are asked to worship this Navagrahas with wives, which shows that it is very old. This village is surrounded by a very few tanks and the water in these tanks is blackish in colour and hence it has acquired this fantastic name. Sri Santhanamari Amman temple which is managed by the yadava community people of Karungulam is at the southern border;Sri Vadakku Vasal Selvi at the northeastern border;Sri Angala Eshvari at the western border;Sri. Kulasekari sameytha Marthandeshwarar at the northern border at the entrance of the village and Lords Venkatesa and Srinivasa at the top of the hill looking at the village saving and protecting the villagers from evils, communicable diseases and other dangers. It is interesting to know how the hill at Karungulam acquired the name Vagulagiri. Once upon a time this hill was flourished and covered with beautiful Vagulam Flowers and so it has acquired this name . The Thamiraparani river flows on the eastern side of this village parallel to the Tirunelveli -Tiruchendur High road. It is believed that the Pushkarani water of Tirupathy adds to Thamiraparani water and makes it sacred. Have a bath in Thamiraparani before going for darshan at vagulagiri makes one purified from sins and elevate him to a peaceful life. This village is very near to the Athichanallur where ancient civilized people lived. Many edges of Tazhi or big pots used to bury the dead bodies are protruding in the earth surface in the ground portion of Kotai Vasal. Coins and mud vessels have obtained in some places where the ground is dug for laying foundation to new houses. Further archaeological probings may bring out the ancient history of this village It is believed that many Siddas have lived in Vagulagiri and even now some are still living in Sukshma and Sthula forms. In the course of time the wound spreat out, worms produced and unbearable pain persisted. What cannot be cured by doctors are easily cured by our deep prayer towards God.Subakandan had good faith in Lord of the seven hills. Sri Venkatachalapathy. He started to Tiruppathy to pay homage to the abiding Lord there. He stayed there for a long time doing prayers, penances and arathanas with full of heart. The Lord came into his dream and asked him to erect a chariot made from the good variety of Sandal Wood available in the nearby forest. After the erection of the chariot two sticks would remain. The Lord told the king that He himself would prevail in these sticks The Lord also asked the king to carry these sticks to the southern parts of India and to a village called Krishna Thadagam or Karungulam and approach the small hill there and find a suitable place.to fix it. These actions would bring a permanent cure to his disease. The king acted accordingly and consecrated these sandal sticks in between the holy tamarind tree called Urangapuli and the existing Sri Srnivasa temple.
