Koppal

Koppal is a town in Koppal district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Koppal is surrounded on three sides by hillocks and was an important town in the history of Karnataka, popularly known as Kopana Nagar. It contains historical locations such as Koppal Fort, Gavimath ((カンナダ語:ಗವಿಮಠ ))(a religious shrine) and the Male Mallappa Temple ((カンナダ語:ಮಳೆ ಮಲ್ಲಪ್ಪ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ )). Koppal is known as Jaina Kashi meaning sacred place for Jains, named because there were more than 72 Basadis (also called Basti)-Jain Prarthana mandir.

According to the 2011 census Koppal district has a population of 1,391,292, roughly equal to the nation of Swaziland or the US state of Hawaii. This gives it a ranking of 350th in India (out of a total of 640).〔
