Kothagudem is the main industrial town in Telangana state which is located in Khammam district located about 270 km from Hyderabad. Kothagudem popularly known as coal town is the mandal HQ (Mdl code-17) in Khammam Dt, Telangana. Kothagudem and palvancha are the twin industrial towns in the state. The North of Kothagudem borders Chhattisgarh state which is approximately 120 km from the town. Kothagudem is the commercial capital of khammam district. Kothagudem is the headquarters for Singareni Collieries Company Limited, the coal producing company in Telangana state, India. It produces 40 million tonnes of coal every year. The area is endowed with rich forests, industries and landscape. Kothagudem is located very near to the temple town of Lord Rama, known as Bhadrachalam. It is approximately 40 km from Bhadrachalam. The Railway station was originally named "Bhadrachalam Road", being the closest railway station to Bhadrachalam, an important pilgrimage location of Rama. ==Demographics== Population 2011: The total population of Kothagudem UA/Metropolitan region is 188,191. There are 93,300 males and 94,891 females. There are 48,094 House Holds in this sub district. Literacy Rate 2011: Literates are 127,200 of which males are 69,058 and Females are 58,142. There are 60,991 Illiterates. Child Population 2011: The children (0-6 age) population of Kothagudem UA is around 9.48% of total Kothagudem UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93%. Further the children below 6 years of age are 17,756 of which 9,059 are males and 8,697 are females. Kothagudem Workers Population: Workers in the State of Kothagudem are calculated as 76,233 of which 50,225 are males and 26,008 are females.
