Kumutu

The word Kumutu has a variety of meanings.
In Saramaccan, a language of Suriname, Kumútu means to leave or "go out from"〔Routledge and Dalby. 1969. African Language Review, Volume 8〕 or Kumutu a döö means to "come outside".〔http://www.sil.org/americas/suriname/Saramaccan/English/SaramEngDictIndex.html?Dict/k.html〕 It is the idea of "going outside" in which the word Kumutu refers to. For example, "Mi hopo kumutu a di wosu" literally means "I get up and go out of the house"〔Rountree, S. Catherine. 1972. "Saramaccan tone in relation to intonation and grammar."〕 The word Kumutu is also found frequently in African languages with alternative meanings. For example it means "sieve" in Zanzibar,〔Ingrams, William Harold . 1931. Comot or Komot in pidgin English spoken in Cameroon and Nigeria denotes to walk out, to leave, e.g. the house or from the way or simply get away...!(comot for there..!)Origin of the word is not known. This goes out to explain the relationship and interaction Africa must have had with the Americas perhaps even before the slave trade.
