Kuninji is a village in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. It is located near to Thodupuzha, a small town in central Travancore. Kuninji is an area surrounded by a number of hills on four sides, which gives a fortified effect. The place comes under the jurisdiction of Purappuzha gram panchayat with around 1,500 inhabitants. The village is mainly inhabited by Syrian Christians and Hindus; the place has a majority of Syrian Christians. The place has a church in the name of St. Antony, on the top of the Kuninji Hill and a temple in the name of Mahadeva and Sree Narayana Guru, a well known social reformer of Kerala. The Kuninji village has a small town center with the name Chelappara, a term derived from a rock near to the town center. East side of Kuninji is surrounded by a hill named Kodikuthi Hill, West end by Thattaranirappu hill, north by Kottamala and Kurian Kunnu hills and south side by Attupurath Hills. Kurian Kunnu hill is the highest among the four hills, rising above sea level. The Kottamala Hill has a height of above sea level. Kottamala Hill provide the effect of a big fort, which is famous for its stretch of 2.5 km. View from the top of Kottamala provide a visibility of around 80 km, up to Cochin Beach. The Arabian Sea, located 80 km away from the base of the hill, can be viewed from the hilltop. Kodikuthi Hill got the name during the British Rule, by a British surveyor, who did the survey of this area. The remains of the survey still exists at the top of this hill. Kuninji is also known to many as a shooting location.
