Leuctrides In Greek legendary history, the Leuctrides (αἱ Λευκτρίδες) were two maidens from the neighborhood of Leuctra, Boeotia, daughters of either Scedasus or Leuctrus (the eponym of Leuctra),〔Scedasus in the accounts of Pausanias (9. 13. 5), Plutarch, ''Love Stories'', 3; Leuctrus in Plutarch, ''On the Maliciousness of Herodotus'', 11. Diodorus Siculus (15. 54. 3) seems to imply that ''two'' sets of maidens, the daughters of Scedasus and the daughters of Leuctrus, were involved. The surname ''Leuctrides'' may accordingly derive either from the placename, as suggested by Plutarch (''Pelopidas'' 20. 3), or from the father's name. For Leuctrus as the eponym of Leuctra, see also ''Etymologicum Magnum'' 561. 50.〕 to whose curse the historical disastrous defeat of the Spartan army in the Battle of Leuctra was attributed. ==Core legend== Legend had it that generations before the aforesaid battle, two noble maidens of Leuctra - variously named Hippo and Molpia (or Miletia), or Theano and Euxippe〔Pausanias (9. 13. 5) suggests Hippo and Molpia, Plutarch (''Love Stories'' 3) Hippo and Miletia, or Theano and Euxippe〕 - were raped by Spartan ambassadors (whose names Pausanias gives as Phrurarchidas and Parthenius). Unable to bear the shame, the sisters hanged themselves. Their father demanded retribution, but received none and subsequently committed suicide over his daughters' tombs, pronouncing a curse upon Sparta. Thus shortly before the battle of Leuctra, which was to take place in the close proximity of the Leuctrides' tombs, both sides reportedly began receiving oracles and omens〔Cf. Pausanias, ''Description of Greece'', 9. 14. 3, where a prophecy of the kind, allegedly received by the Thespian adversaries of the Thebans, is cited〕 predicting the defeat of Sparta at the hands of the Thebans due to "wrath of the Leuctrides", to the encouragement of the Theban leaders, among whom there had previously been disagreement as to whether to join in the battle at all; Epaminondas was said to have prayed to Scedasus and his daughters for assistance.〔Pausanias, ''Description of Greece'', 9. 13. 4 - 6〕〔Diodorus Siculus, ''Library of History'', 15. 54. 2 - 3〕〔Plutarch, ''Life of Pelopidas'', 20. 3 - 4〕〔Xenophon, ''Hellenica'', 6. 4. 7 (brief mention)〕
