Macistus Macistus or makistos is a term derived from Doric Greek meaning tallest or greatest.〔LSJ: Attic: mêkistos Doric: (μάκιστος )〕 ==Mythology== Makistios was an epithet of Heracles, who had a temple in the neighbourhood of the town of Macistus in Triphylia, Elis (Peloponnese).〔Strabo. ''Geographica'', (8.3.21 ): '' — In the intervening space are both the temple of the Macistian Heracles and the Acidon River.''.〕 Macistus was also a son of Athamas and brother of Phrixus, from whom the town of Macistus in Triphylia was believed to have derived its name.〔Steph. Byz. s. v. Makistos.〕
