The entire municipality is part of the traditional region of Inner Carniola and is now included in the Central Slovenia Statistical Region.〔(Ig municipal site )〕 ==Name== Matena was attested in written sources in 1496 as ''Mathesdorf''. The name is probably a contraction of '' *Matejina'', derived from the Biblical name ''Matej'' 'Matthew', thus meaning 'Matthew's settlement'.
