''Mawla'' (, ''mawlā'') is an Arabic word which appears in the Quran and several hadith. ==Definition== Morphologically, ''mawla'' is composed from the morpheme indicating a locative (a "noun of place", ''ism al-makān'') derived from the root ''waliyah'' () or ''al-wilāyah'' (), classically translated as "to be proximal" to both parties in a hierarchical relationship〔Wehr, Hans. (1979) ''A Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic:'' (Arabic-English)/ Hans Wehr. Ed. by J Milton Cowan. -4. ed., Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz 〕 or "to intercede". The word thus literally means "place of intercession". Historically, the word has been used to mean master, protector, or supporter and is used as a synonym of ''wali'', ''wilayah'', and ''awliya''. It can also mean a guardian, emancipated slave, friend, or loved one. ==Use== The meaning of the word is critical to the Hadith of the Pond of Khumm, taken by Shia to refer to Ali's succession to Muhammad and by Sunni to simply refer to friendship.
